BWW Review: ELF at First Stage is the Merriest Show in Milwaukee!
December 13, 2019

First Stage has given us all an early Christmas present in Elf the Musical. Yes, the merriest show in Milwaukee right now is one about a human raised by elves. Elf is a joyful, exuberant, super-playful night of theater that caters to kids and full-sized humans alike. It's also running through December 29th and so would make a fantastic Christmas present or holiday outing.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Upholds Tradition at The Milwaukee Rep
BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Upholds Tradition at The Milwaukee Rep
November 30, 2019

Now in its 44th year, this production is firmly rooted in tradition. Since its 2016 reenvisioning, there's been little in the way of new surprises, but that's what traditions are all about: passing down an experience and, hopefully, maintaining the integrity of that experience. Through its dedication to this holiday tradition, The Rep creates a Christmas Carol that feels like coming home a?" familiar, warm, and inviting.

November 27, 2019

For 'The Band's Visit,' I have nothing but praises to sing. It's an uplifting reminder of all that we share and of what good and beauty can come when we open our doors and hearts to the unknown.

BWW Review: Kids Cast Carries NEWSIES at Skylight
November 18, 2019

Overall, this is a play about the young having their voices heard. Says Director of this Skylight production, Molly Rhode, a?oeThe Newsboys Strike of 1899 may have been at the turn of the century, but it doesn't feel far away. The way these young people stand up and say, 'Listen to me!' is happening right now, all across the globea?? Young people are paying attention. And they deserve a seat at the table.a??

BWW Review: The Milwaukee Rep Unleashes THE NERD
BWW Review: The Milwaukee Rep Unleashes THE NERD
November 18, 2019

The thing about 'The Nerd' is it's a farce, which The Rep's audience guide breaks down as a?oea specific style of comedy characterized by unlikely predicaments, verbal humor, mistaken identities, and physical comedy.a?? So within farce, one encounters absurd situations, fast-paced wit, and a touch of slapstick. In other words, there's a little something funny for everyone.

BWW Review: HAMILTON National Tour Brings Non-Stop Energy to the Marcus Center
BWW Review: HAMILTON National Tour Brings Non-Stop Energy to the Marcus Center
October 26, 2019

Part of what makes Hamilton such a beloved work is the way it balances sorrow and upset with lightness and fun. Revisiting history doesn't have to be a slog. We all can learn a thing or two about our country's formative years while singing along to a?oeCabinet Meetinga?? rap battles in your car. Hamilton makes history accessible and relevant, reminding us in song of the power of the written word, how immigrants shaped our nation, and that the world is wide enough to coexist and learn from each other's ideals. Those are some profound lessons, all courtesy of a show that's so much more than a hip-hop musical.

BWW Preview: MOT's UTTERANCE Promises the Eerie & Beautiful this Halloween Weekend
October 24, 2019

'Utterance will be like nothing you've seen before!' promises the Milwaukee Opera Theatre (MOT). If any other theater in town made such a wild claim, I'd probably shake my head. But with MOT at the helm, I don't doubt it for a moment.

BWW Review: Celebrate a Classic with OKLAHOMA! at Skylight Music Theatre
BWW Review: Celebrate a Classic with OKLAHOMA! at Skylight Music Theatre
October 7, 2019

This Skylight production is certainly more stripped down, relying on simple orchestrations, bare-bones sets, and a small ensemble to achieve something great. A production like this allows the strongest bit of 'Oklahoma!' -- the music -- to shine.

BWW Review: Touring DEAR EVAN HANSEN Sends a Message That Matters
BWW Review: Touring DEAR EVAN HANSEN Sends a Message That Matters
September 25, 2019

Every so often, a Broadway show comes along that speaks to the present generation. A show that resonates with a powerful, relatable message for the here and now. People lose their minds over such a spectacle because they feel heard and see a glimmer of themselves -- their struggles, hopes, fears -- reflected in art. For that reason, Dear Evan Hansen is an important piece of theater in 2019.

September 23, 2019

Even if you've seen West Side Story twenty times before -- even if you know it's based on Romeo & Juliet and therefore tragedy is imminent -- the Milwaukee Rep has succeeded in giving every theater-loving person countless reasons to come out and see it once more.

BWW Review: 2 PIANOS 4 HANDS is Fun Cabaret Fare at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater
September 11, 2019

2 Pianos 4 Hands is a love letter to the play's titular instrument. It celebrates the classical composers and teachers who inspire, the parents who encourage, and especially the kids who put in the work, sacrifice their time, chase that dream, and may or may not achieve it.

BWW Review: UNNECESSARY FARCE Wins Slapstick Laughs at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre
August 15, 2019

This is farcical theater to the extreme, aimed at testing your reflex for laughter. What a fun and funny way to kick off the 2019a?"2020 theater season here in Milwaukee. I'd say this 'Farce' is anything but unnecessary.

BWW Review: ANASTASIA Dazzles While Drawing Comparisons For Fans Of The 1997 Film
July 25, 2019

This Anastasia is impeccably performed, gorgeously rendered, and entertaining to be sure. Still, to me, the new songs don't soar alongside the old ones. I wonder how I'd feel if I didn't already know those old songs by heart. That's the risk the show's creators took in translating Anastasia for Broadway.

BWW Review: A Dynamite Duo Makes KISS ME KATE A Golden Age Delight
May 24, 2019

Another op'nin, another show! This time it's a battle of the sexes and a Golden Age musical by Cole Porter. Inspired by the real-life backstage bickering of famous husband-and-wife actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, Kiss Me Kate is both based on real-life events as well as Shakespeare's controversial Taming of the Shrew.

BWW Review: Uplifting COME FROM AWAY Rocks the Marcus Center
May 9, 2019

Though panic, sadness, and uncertainty are felt in Come From Away, there's very little all-out gloom. Rather, this is a story that celebrates the best of humanity and how, in a time of crisis, we have the capacity to come together as friends and neighbors above all else. One line in the show reflects on 9/11 with a simple truth: 'So many stories gone just like that.' Come From Away preserves one such story - a story that's uplifting and deeply worthy of its musical retelling.

BWW Review: Uplifting EVERY BRILLIANT THING Shines at Milwaukee Repertory Theater
April 15, 2019

When a play is as aptly named as this one, it makes my job a breeze. It's not just the "brilliant" part; it's also the "every." From the supremely engaging Scott Greer to the perfectly-sentimental script by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe to the overall format of the evening, under the direction of Terrence J. Nolen, there's no end to the brilliance of 'Every Brilliant Thing.'
