singing in the street to buy milk for their ailing mother, only to have the quest thwarted by the evil organ grinder Brundibár. Extolling the triumph of good over evil, Brundibár has become an allegory of Hitler and the Nazi reign. Today, the opera provides a vehicle to instruct children in the importance of responsibility and courage in standing up against bullying and tyranny.
NOTE: Performed by children during the Holocaust at the Terezin concentration camp near Prague, Brundibár was used by the Nazi regime as a propaganda tool to delude the outside world into thinking the Jewish prisoners were being treated humanely.
