Synopsis
One of America's most revered and provocative dramatists, David Mamet conquers new territory with this droll comedy of errors set in a Victorian drawing room and featuring an all-female cast. Anna and Claire are two bantering, scheming ladies of fashion who have long lived together on the fringes of upper-class society. Anna has just become the mistress of a wealthy man, from whom she has received an enormous emerald and an income to match. Claire, meanwhile, is infatuated with a respectable young lady and wants to enlist the jealous Anna's help for an assignation. As the two women exchange barbs and take turns taunting Anna's hapless parlour maid, Claire's young inamorata suddenly appears, setting off a crisis that puts the valuable emerald at risk and threatens the women's future. Think "Absolutely Fabulous" set in the Victorian Era and you have an idea of the outrageous foibles of Anna and Claire.
Character Descriptions
Anna 35-50
Anna is a Victorian age lesbian in the fading years of her youth who has managed to guarantee an appreciable income and comfortable living circumstances through her affair with a married gentleman who has become her benefactor and given her a choker with an emerald pendant big enough to "choke a horse." Anna, nevertheless, still has feelings for her ex-lover Claire who is somewhat younger than Anna and has moved on to other pursuits. Anna survives through her cunning and ability to dupe men. She is better read and probably more intelligent than Claire, whose affections she will do anything to regain. Both leads must have strong comedic timing while being able to deftly navigate Mamet's quick witted repartee that introduces modern sensibilities couched in Victorian turns of phrase.
Claire 25-35
Claire is a young, unattached lesbian woman living on the fringes of upscale Victorian society. She once was Anna's lover, but that has ended and she is currently pursuing a young uninitiated girl for whom she has fallen head over heels. Claire visits Anna, her ex, to ask her to allow Claire to meet with her prospective lover in Anna's apartment. Claire is less educated and younger than Anna. Both leads must have strong comedic timing while being able to deftly navigate Mamet's quick witted repartee that features modern sensibilities couched in Victorian turns of phrase.
Catherine 18-25
Catherine is Anna's Scottish maid. She has to put up with Anna and Claire's merciless verbal abuse, but in the end there is much more to her than meets the eye. The actress playing Catherine must have superb comedic timing and the ability to execute a Scottish dialect. Though the role is listed as supporting, this is a meaty, funny role in a play with only 3 characters.
