Black Henna Productions in association with Theatre Beyond Broadway presents Hamlet: Viking Prince of Denmark under the direction of Kelly Monroe Johnson; fight director: Michael Hagins this June. In 925 AD, the King of Denmark died. Accompanied by his best friend, the Prince returns home from University in Wittenburg to attend the funeral and thus begins his quest to prove that the death was anything but natural. Suspecting his uncle of usurping the throne by force, and his mother of being complicit in the affair, the young prince sets loose a series of events that can only culminate in one way – bloodshed, vengeance, and slaughter. This is Hamlet, Viking Prince of Denmark.
Shakespeare’s Hamlet was based on the Scandinavian legend of Prince Amleth, but set in the mid-1500s. Black Henna Productions Is bringing the Melancholy Dane back to his roots by setting their adaptation of Hamlet in the 10th century royal longhouse of the ruling Viking clan of Denmark. Vengeance will have its due, and from now on our thoughts be bloody!
Roles:
CLAUDIUS (50s) – a charming, assertive leader who will do whatever needs to be done to save his village, and more importantly, himself. A master of politics, a cunning warrior, and an assured leader whose doubt and fear of his wife’s son grows over the course of events. Doubles with the Ghost.
GERTRUDE (50s) – a strong, doting mother who is a Viking shieldmaiden and has been Queen of the village for her entire adult life. She will do whatever needs to be done for her son.
LAERTES (40s) – Ophelia’s brother. A hot-head and a very able fighter. He believes in family first and will stop at nothing to avenge those closest to him. Must be able to handle fight choreography.
POLONIUS (50s-60s) – advisor to Claudius and Gertrude, father of Ophelia and Laertes. Polonius is a professional political advisor and trader in secrets. As one of the village elders, he had access to the ruler his entire adult life. He trusts no one and nothing.
PROTEANS (any age) – these four performers will play Marcellus, Bernardo, the Gravedigger, the Gravedigger’s Assistant, the Player king, the Player Queen, among other roles. Looking for actors who relish playing multiple characters and creating the world of the show.
