This evening concert features the Juilliard String Quartet, hailed by the Boston Globe as “the
most important American quartet in history," in performance as part of Juilliard’s Daniel
Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series. The program includes the New York premiere of Lembit
Beecher’s One Hundred Years Grows Shorter Over Time – written specially for the Quartet this
year – alongside Beethoven’s third string quartet and Dvorák’s “American” string quartet.
Beecher writes in his note of his new work, “As I began writing I thought about the span of 100
years: how, over time, our lives turn into stories told by our children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren, the complications and subtleties of life crystalizing into anecdotes as actual
memories fade. The three movements of this quartet are like successive generations retelling the
same story. Musical material is passed from movement to movement, but along the way it is
reinterpreted and reshaped into something quite different.”
Program:
Beethoven: Quartet No. 3 in D Major, Op. 18, No. 3
Lembit Beecher One Hundred Years Grows Shorter Over Time (2018)
Dvorák: Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 “American”
