Illyria: A New Musical Based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
Book by Cara Reiche
Music & Lyrics by Peter Mills
“Illyria, land of fools; where clarity’s a rarity, and madness rules!” This musical re-telling of Twelfth Night, Shakespeare's greatest comedy, captures both the rollicking energy of the play's hilarious hijinks and its deeply felt emotions of loss and unrequited love. Following a terrible shipwreck, Viola is alone and lost without her twin brother, Sebastian, who she believes has drowned in the mighty torrent. Without protection in this strange new world, she dons her brother’s identity and dresses as a man to fit in. She falls in love at first sight with Duke Orsino and simultaneously finds herself the object of the Countess Olivia’s lusty affections. Sebastian, having survived after all, finally arrives in Illyria in search of his sister. Hilarity, mistaken identity, and havoc ensue, but a happy ending is in store for all – perhaps even for Malvolio!
