Childs grew up in Los Angeles in a home with two older sisters. One turned him on to jazz; the other turned him on to Laura Nyro, the singer-songwriter whose early albums became part of the soundtrack to his boyhood. Now, having been inspired by her songs for decades, he presents a concert based on Nyro’s expansive music catalogue. Her almost gothic and haunting recordings went almost unheard by all but her cult following, including her admiring artistic contemporaries, until they were rearranged and became golden pop and rock hits for Streisand ("Stony End"), Three Dog Night ("Eli's Comin'") and The Fifth Dimension ("Save the Children," "Wedding Bell Blues").
“Higher Ground: Artists Inspiring Community” kick off event. Nyro reanimated musical traditions for audiences of her turbulent times and now. Honor Nyro's soulful poetry of peace and consciousness, which leads to the Presenting Series’ MLK Week performances of Camille A. Brown & Dancers.
