I Was Unbecoming Then is a new musical set in a North Vancouver high school music room in 2006, following twelve girls as they strive to impress their choir director, Bruce. The show explores themes of adolescent girlhood, the impact of sexual violence on self-identity, and the influence of early 2000s culture on young women. Featuring a book and lyrics by Lyndsey Bourne, music by Sam Kaseta, and direction by Ilana Khanin, the production showcases experimental choral music performed by a cast of women, trans, and non-binary artists, including Astrid Atherly and Heeyun Park. The musical is part of the 17th Annual Toronto Fringe Next Stage Theatre Festival, taking place at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre from October 16 to 27, 2024.
